Most of you know that I have taken on a year-long certification with The Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health and nutrition coach. This has been a fascinating experience thus far and I am learning much (yes, showing my nerdy side). The school is based on a simple thought of the importance of PRIMARY FOOD. I have intuitively believed in this thought but have never put it into terminology or definition until now. Primary food consists of healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career and a spiritual practice. Primary food is much more than what is on your plate. In fact we cannot even begin to address secondary food like pizza, chocolate cake and twizzlers until we balance the primary food in our lives. Secondary foods don’t come close to giving us happiness, fulfillment, purpose and joy that we receive from primary foods. “The more primary food we receive, the less we depend upon secondary food. The opposite is also true. The more we fill ourselves with secondary food, the less we are able to receive the primary food of life.” Says Joshua Rosenthal, founder and director of The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Remember a time when you were in love. Or a time when you felt especially purposeful and thrilled in your life. Or maybe a time when you were a child and to take time out to eat dinner and have to go inside from playing kick the can with your friends was unbearable. In all of the above scenarios you were being feed well with primary food. We need to get back to the zest for primary food and get away from numbing out with the real or not so real stuff. “When we use secondary food as a way to alleviate or suppress our hunger for primary food, the body and mind suffer. Weight gain is just one of the consequences. Diet related disorders such as heart disease, cancer, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes are national epidemics, and one of the main reasons is because we are stuffing ourselves with secondary foods when we are really starving for primary food.” ~Joshua Rosenthal I have worked with many people that are very healthy eaters and I enjoy eating as whole and clean as I can. But, I also know a lot of people that eat tons of kale and yet they are still unhappy. If the concept of primary food is of interest to you and you would like to know more, I would love to talk to YOU! Please contact me or come into The Fit Room.
